'Spiritual birth' and 'Born again'
How can I be born again?
John 3:3 -
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
-
In this verse Jesus says we must be born again in order to go to heaven.
1 Peter 1:23 -
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."
-
Incorruptible seed is obtained by the Word of God through spiritual birth; God's Spirit (which is incorruptible) abides within our spirit. "Incorruptible" means "incapable of being corrupted".
John 3:1-7 -
"There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
-
Nicodemus asked Jesus how one can be born again after he's already been born? Jesus explained that being born of water (physical birth by your mother) is not the same as being born of the Spirit (spiritual birth by God). Being born by your mother (flesh) is different than being born spiritually (the Holy Spirit of God)--they are two different births. When the Bible refers to being "born again" it means spiritual birth. Born again spiritually, after you have been born physically.
Romans 10:9-10 -
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
-
Confess out loud to Jesus that you believe in your heart you are a sinner, He died for your sins, was buried and rose again from the dead on the third day and you will be saved from an eternity in hell. Your confession must be heart-felt in order to count for righteousness.
Ephesians 2:8-9 -
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast."
-
It is by God's grace that you are saved, through faith. You cannot work for or earn this gift ... there is nothing you can do to save yourself or get to heaven without accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour.
Romans 3:23 -
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
-
Everyone is a sinner (ever told a lie? ever stolen anything?) and because we are sinners, we cannot be in the presence of the Almighty God in Heaven and are destined for hell. In order to be cleansed from our sin and saved from an eternity in hell, we must be born into God's family through spiritual birth.
2 Corinthians 5:17 -
"Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
-
Once you receive God's free gift of salvation (saved, born again spiritually), you are a new creature in Christ--you begin a new life spiritually. Now the growth begins! Read and study God's Word!
John 3:16 -
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
-
God loves you so much that he sent His only Son (Jesus) to become sin for us, to die for us and our sins, so that we could have everlasting life in heaven with Him. Jesus paid our sin penalty! We are bought with a price and are no longer our own! We need God's Holy Spirit in our heart (through Jesus) in order to spend eternity in heaven.
John 14:6 -
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
-
No one enters heaven without first accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour before they die.
Mark 16:16 -
"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."
-
Belief saves you (spiritual birth) by God's grace; Baptism is an act of obedience to show others you have been spiritually born after you've been born again. Baptism does NOT save you, God's grace does! If you don't believe Jesus can save you, you will be damned and spend eternity in hell without Christ.
2 Peter 3:9 -
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
-
The Lord is patient with us concerning His promise and gift of salvation, waiting for us to repent and accept His gift so that we do not suffer the consequences of dying and going to hell. But don't delay ... you never know when you'll die and if you haven't accepted Christ before death, you will spend an eternity in hell. There are no second chances!
