Yesterday’s message (Happy as a Bird on the Wing) brought to mind a ‘secular’ song about birds and brokenness. So continuing with the ‘bird’ theme … ‘bird’ appears in God’s Word 25 times; ‘birds’ (plural) also appears 25 times. The song of the bird is beautiful, and often taken for granted.
God uses birds (fowls of the air, doves, sparrow, eagle, swallow, ravens, etc.) in different ways to teach, describe or perform. John likened the Holy Spirit to a dove when He saw it descending from heaven (John 1:32). It was a raven and then a dove that Noah sent forth out of the ark to see if the waters were abated from off the earth. (Genesis 8)
Song of Solomon 2:12 - “The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;”
Luke 9:58 - “And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”
Released in 1997, today’s song describes a life becoming broken and dreams shattered, likened to a bird with a broken wing.
With so many people never hearing … or some hearing but rejecting … the gift Jesus offers, it is no wonder we live in such a broken world. Jesus doesn’t promise an easy life, but He does promise life eternal in heaven for those who humble themselves and accept His gift of salvation.
And with a broken wing, she still sings
She keeps an eye on the sky.
With a broken wing, she carries her dreams
Man, you ought to see her fly!
Just because your wing is broken doesn’t mean you can’t still sing! Jesus will take your broken wing and mend it. He will take your broken life and put the pieces back together again.
He’ll take that broken wing and use it for His glory. You will fly higher than you could ever imagine … all because of Him. Man, you ought to see Him fly!
But it all starts with you.
Do you want to fly?
