Abra-ham

There are many fascinating people in the Bible to study. One of the most blessed is Abraham (which means 'father of a great multitude') because of his faithful life. The feminine form of the name is simply Abra.

As a result of Abraham's faithfulness, Christians are considered his spiritual son and heir of God's promises.

Galatians 3:7-9 - "Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham."

Born in the city of Ur of the Chaldees to a family that included older brothers Haran and Nahor, Abram, although not the firstborn in the family, was heir of God's promises instead of his brothers. Considered a 'biblical patriarch,' Abraham was originally named Abram but God changed his name.

Genesis 17:5 - “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.”

One of the things God promises Abraham is that He will bless him and make his name great. (Genesis 12:1-3). He also promises him that his wife Sarah will no longer be barren but will bare him a child ... and when he is 100 years old and Sarah is in her nineties, Isaac is born! Now that's a miracle!

God tests Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his only son but Isaac is spared when the Angel of the Lord stops Abraham from sacrificing him. Abraham dies at the age of 175, but lived to see his son turn 75 and his grandson Jacob (later renamed 'Israel') turn the age of 15. Sarah, who preceded Abraham in death at the age of 127, was the only woman in the Bible whose age at death is mentioned.

There are many interesting stories about Abraham in the Bible. We encourage you to study his life.
