Facing a Mountain-sized Trial

There’s a beautiful song by the Gaither Vocal Band that speaks of facing a mountain-size trial and calling out to God for help. Today, let's look at the significance of 'mountain(s)' in God’s Word.

The word mountain appears 130 times in the Holy Bible and the plural appears 167 times.

Mountains not only represent strength, stability, power, places of encounter with God, and spiritual transformation, they symbolize victory, refuge, God’s glory; they’re also places for worship and sacrifices.

Just as today’s song suggests, mountains can also represent obstacles and challenges we must overcome. Like mountains standing tall and firm, we can find strength and refuge in God’s presence if we will call on Him for help. Doing so allows us to persevere and experience His power and love.

God uses trials to test us and draw us closer to Him. Will we run to Him or turn away?

Deuteronomy 2:3 - “Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.”

There are many 'famous' mountains in the Bible. Here are just three:

Mount Sinai was where God revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush and later gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites, symbolizing divine law and covenant, and as reminders of God’s guidance and our responsibility to live according to His will.

Mount Moriah was where Abraham was to sacrifice his son Isaac. This same mountain became the site of Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, symbolizing sacrifice, obedience, and God’s provision.

The Mount of Olives was a place of teaching, prayer, and the setting for Christ’s ascension. It connects the earthly Jerusalem with the heavenly one, symbolizing our hope in the resurrection and the promise of Christ’s return.

Lyrics: I faced a mountain that I never faced before. That's why I'm calling on You, Lord. I know it's been a while, but Lord please hear my prayer. I need You like I never have before. Sometimes it takes a mountain, sometimes a troubled sea. Sometimes it takes a desert to get a hold of me. Your love is so much stronger than whatever troubles me. Sometimes it takes a mountain to trust You and believe.
Joel 3:16-17“The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. 17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.”

The day of wrath (a terrible day for those who oppose Christ) will be the final victory for those in Christ … all glory to our Redeemer! Pray that every lost soul awakens in order to avoid the wrath to come.

Mountains invite us to seek a higher perspective and encounter God.
