Joseph's Colorful Coat

Updated: Oct 24, 2021

The familiar Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colours is one of redemption and forgiveness. Jacob (Israel), Joseph's father, clearly favored his second-youngest son, Joseph, which caused the older boys to hate him (Joseph) and eventually resulted in his banishment into Egyptian slavery. Joseph’s life was one of character, courage, conviction, and commitment.

Maybe you remember the song and story (and movie) of Dolly Parton and the coat of many colors that her Mama made for her … inspired by the Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Joseph's life story, from prisoner to prince, is told in Genesis chapters 37-50, comprising one quarter of the Book of Genesis.

Genesis 37:3, 23, 31-33 - “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; 31-33 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of [many] colours, and they brought [it] to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it [be] thy son's coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, [It is] my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.”

It is interesting to consider that no fault or sin of Joseph is mentioned in Scripture, attributes similar to those of our Lord Jesus.
