Little Lights

We recently went camping in Branson with our oldest daughter, son-in-law and 7-year-old twin granddaughters. The girls stayed with us one night and after dinner, as we were sitting by the campfire, one of them suggested we tell scary stories. Since the Bible is full of scary stories, we talked about Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace; also the story of Jonah and the whale. Both girls were familiar with the stories and told us all about them. Then we talked about the lessons we can learn from each story.

Soon it was time to shower and get ready for a movie before bedtime. When asked who wanted to shower first, they both responded, “I do!” So it was decided a coin toss was necessary to determine the ‘winner,’ who would get to choose who took a shower first. Heads and tails were decided upon and the toss was made.

The one who won the toss told the other that she could shower first, and when asked why she didn’t choose to go first herself, she replied, “Because I prayed I would win the coin toss and I figured since God answered my prayer, I should be nice and let my sister go first” … to which the other sister replied, “I’m happy that my sister is being thoughtful! God wants us to put others before ourself. Since sissy did that for me, I’ll do the same by agreeing to watch whatever movie she chooses.”

Philippians 2:3 - Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”

Now mind you, these little ‘angels’ are sometimes found pouting over not getting their ‘way’ … or arguing with one another, like all siblings do ... but what an incredible blessing to have grandchildren who have been taught to love the Lord and are learning to apply His Word to their lives!

Proverbs 22:6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

We will never forget that special evening, and our prayer is that our whole family will shine God’s Light and shut out the darkness of this world. As Matthew Henry once said, “Those who are beloved of Christ will love the brethren for His sake. Soul prosperity is the greatest blessing on this side of heaven.”

3John 1:4 - “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Christ-followers, be a beacon and let God’s Light shine through you!
