God’s Word is full of promises, some are general, some are specific and some are conditional.
For Example: General promise - 1John 1:9 - “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This promise is made available to everyone.
Specific promise – 1Kings 9:5 - “Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.” God is speaking to King Solomon and making this promise to him only. Conditional promise – John 15:7 - “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Many of the conditional promises contain the word “IF”, requiring something we need to do before the promise is fulfilled.
As humans, many of us have made promises we have not kept, intentionally or unintentionally. But God doesn’t want us to make a vow to Him that we don’t keep (i.e., “God, if you’ll answer my prayer, I promise I’ll ___.”). Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 says, “When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” If you make a promise, God expects you to keep it!
2Peter 1:4a - “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature,...”
God gives us promises to help us trust Him and submit to His will. God always fulfills His promises, but not necessarily in our timing or the way we expect. It is by God’s grace and through faith He offers salvation for our soul. That same faith allows us to trust in His promises!
