Today’s song by Matthew West, who is known for composing songs based on the lives of people who inspired him, is a true story about a man from Houston, Texas, Ron Janca, who recently succumbed to a three-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or ‘Lou Gehrig's disease’.
Janca reached out to West to express gratitude for his songs and to share his story. West intended to encourage Ron, but it was Ron who encouraged West. Ron had no way of knowing that West was going through a difficult time of his own and he saw past his own battle with ALS and encouraged West. That impacted West in a big way and inspired him to write this song.
God’s Word calls for us to encourage and edify one another. Romans 14:19 - “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” Zechariah 7:9 – “Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:”
Ron from Houston, Texas
Spent three years fightin' ALS
If you knew all that he's been through
You'd hardly say he's blessed
But smilin' through a phone call
He said "Let me tell you, friend
This life ain't always wonderful
But what a wonderful life it's been."
God hasn’t promised us a rosey life here on this earth, but He has promised the gift of heaven for eternity to those who accept it. In heaven, there will be no tears, pain or suffering … or horrible diseases such as ALS.
